Overview Position: Assistant Director of Standardized Patients (CUSOM) Department: Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUSOM), Campbell University Status: Full Time Summary: The Assistant Director of Standardized Patients assists the Director of OSCE Education and Assessment in administering all aspects of the Standardized Patient (SP) Program and OSCE administration and assessment at Campbell University. This role supports the training and development of CUSOM students and residents as well as other health professions students from Campbell University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (CPHS). The position involves managing recruitment, training and assessment of SPs and all case presentations involving SPs. Candidates should have strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to identify administrative and operational deficiencies along with performance improvement strategies. The role requires honesty, integrity and a professional demeanor in alignment with Campbell University’s Christian mission. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Collaborate with CUSOM, CPHS, Graduate Medical Education (GME) and other Campbell University programs to provide guidance and feedback on the design and implementation of OSCE SP training activities. Train, supervise, and evaluate SP team members to ensure SP performances meet case goals and align with nationally accepted standards and best practices in SP education. Assist the Director in designing and administering SP performance improvement plans, initiatives and professional development activities. Provide operational leadership and logistical support for SP educational programming across CUSOM, CPHS, GME and CU programs. Identify appropriate Standardized Patients for educational activities based on required skills, experience, demographics and activity objectives. Schedule team members for cases, reserve training spaces, and manage training logistics. Complete and track payroll for SP events and activities. Create QR codes for Friday Clinical Case surveys and SP payroll tracking. Develop and manage the monthly OSCE session schedule for 3rd and 4th year medical students. Provide pre-brief orientations and instructions to student learners prior to OSCE sessions and proctor OSCE sessions as needed. Communicate with SPs, faculty, external clients and the public in a professional and effective manner; represent the SP Program positively on and off campus. Foster transparency, interdisciplinary collaboration and accountability in all areas. Optimize resource allocation to support educational and programmatic objectives for internal and external stakeholders. Stay current with developments in healthcare and medical education; represent the patient voice in training, case materials and simulated encounters. Maintain compliance and quality improvement goals aligned with national accreditation standards. Uphold Campbell University policies and procedures, including Title IX, HIPAA and FERPA guidelines. Other duties as assigned. Administration and Assessment Track pre- and post-assessment of activities and assignment completion. Schedule and coordinate OSCE attendance, makeup sessions, schedule changes and re-education as necessary; email faculty feedback and challenge reports to students. Monitor absences and report performance deductions to appropriate personnel. Collaborate with course directors to prepare debrief documents and assemble student challenge submissions; report outcomes to students. Develop efficient systems for routine tasks to address backlogs and bottlenecks; propose improvements to streamline assessment-driven operations. Direct students with grievances to the appropriate party; manage logistics for Senior Partner Activities in collaboration with relevant faculty. Education/Experience Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum of three years of experience in an educational or corporate environment; three years of management and/or training experience in a medical field preferred. Theater experience is encouraged but not required; significant SP acting experience is preferred. Considerable weight given to leadership and/or teaching experience at an accredited medical school. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to teach SPs how to perform, communicate, interpret checklist items, and provide constructive feedback on patient-physician interactions. Ability to collaborate with faculty to develop case materials and checklists/rating scales; basic knowledge of clinical skills and medical history-taking is helpful but not required. Excellent organizational, leadership and management skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects with a diverse group. Strong written and verbal communication; maintain tact, courtesy and discretion in dealing with faculty, staff, students and the public. Ability to analyze data for learner assessment and program evaluation; drive program improvements in collaboration with experts. Ability to work under pressure with composure and maintain constructive working relationships; work autonomously and as part of a team. Proficiency with technology and software: Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Docs, Qualtrics, Sim EMR, Wufoo, Survey Monkey and related tools. Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold high ethical standards. Complexity of Duties Extensive collaboration with faculty, staff and students across programs. Require planning 3–6 months in advance while addressing immediate operational needs. Adaptability, problem-solving and independent judgment in dynamic situations; creative approaches to training, feedback and assessment; improve operational efficiency.
