Costumer / Theater Costume Designer, Camp Kaleidoscope, Summer Day Camp Share your love of musical theater and costume design with children this summer! Camp Kaleidoscope, the JCC performing arts day camp in Newton, is seeking a creative and enthusiastic costumer to work with the Theater Director to design, create, and modify costumes for two fully‑staged musical theater productions. Work with campers grades 4‑10, lead costuming classes, and produce costumes for the musical productions. What You Will Do You will work closely with the Theater Director and theatre team to prepare for two fully staged musical productions, envisioning, designing, and producing costumes and props. You will involve campers in costuming classes, teaching them sewing and new skills. Responsibilities Produce costumes and props for two fully‑staged musical theater productions each summer. Modify existing costumes and props to fit campers as needed. Work under the direction of the Theater Director and collaborate closely with camp theatre production staff. Plan and lead costuming specialty classes for campers daily; lead campers in creating costumes and props when appropriate. Meet deadlines and keep to project budgets. Work with the inclusion coordinator to facilitate accommodations for campers with special needs. Display flexibility and a positive attitude throughout the production process. Qualifications High school degree preferred. College degree, concentration, certification, or equivalent experience in musical theater, costume or fashion design preferred. 1+ season of summer camp, semester, or other instructor experience planning and leading activities for children. Portfolio or examples of projects preferred. Customer service experience preferred. Skills & Abilities Genuine enjoyment of working with children and helping them grow. Passion and expertise in sewing and costume design and production. Ability to plan and lead age‑appropriate, engaging, and inclusive activities. Excellent group management, communication, teamwork, and collaboration skills. Safety awareness and ability to manage risks during activities. Creativity, flexibility, and patience to adapt activities for diverse camper needs. Positive, energetic attitude and commitment to fostering an inclusive, joyful camp environment. Proactive problem‑solving and willingness to ask for guidance when needed. Self‑starter who takes initiative. Ability to work well with others, building and sustaining collaborative relationships. Physical Requirements Able to work well in a busy, dynamic, and sometimes noisy environment involving multiple tasks and priorities. Work in a variety of weather conditions for extended periods, ensuring supervision and safety of campers. Able to lift and carry objects weighing 30‑40 pounds (boxes of supplies, children’s backpacks, etc.). Able to sit, kneel, and get down at eye level with children regularly. JCC Health & Fitness center access. Competitive starting pay rate of $20 per hour (subject to qualifications and internal equity). Job Details Hourly position with a daily schedule of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday. Camp runs June 22 – August 21, including staff training. Availability all summer preferred, but flexible scheduling discussed.
